All licenses are valid July 1st of a given year until June 30th of the following year. If a license is not renewed by June 30th of each year, a $200.00 late fee penalty will be assessed.

The Board can verify a single license or provide the entire list (written or electronic) of the Public Registry of all Active Optometrists in West Virginia. Fees apply.

W. Va. State Rule §14-1-3 lists application requirements and documentation. Since 2011, applicants need to submit proof of a passing score on the NBEO’s injection skills examination (ISE) or provide proof of injection certification after completion of an approved course. Please contact the Board with questions.

All application materials must be received by the Board office before a license applicant can be evaluated by the Board at their next meeting. Please contact the Board office for more information about upcoming dates.

An applicant can be assigned an interview date and time after all required materials are submitted to the Board and the application is deemed complete. 

Traditionally, interview dates for license applicants occur in February, May, July and October. Additional dates may be available. Interviews may be conducted in person or on a zoom conference call during a Board meeting. Please contact the Board for more information about possible upcoming meeting dates.

A total of forty (40) hours of Continuing Education in Optometry are required for each even-numbered two-year cycle. The current CE reporting period is from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2026.
